Shrine’s Legacy is a 16-bit action RPG launching on PC this October 7. The narrative follows young heroes Rio and Reima as they strive to banish an ancient evil and save the world.
A quick glance at the screenshots reveals that the game's aesthetic draws heavy inspiration from SNES-era RPGs. Shrine’s Legacy supports both solo play and two-player co-op, available via local couch co-op or online through Remote Play and Parsec. In co-op mode, one player controls Rio (a melee fighter) while the other controls Reima (a ranged mage). Solo players can switch between characters at any time, with AI taking over control of the inactive character.
Developed primarily by longtime friends Alan Gabbard and Joseph Duke, this two-person team received additional support from fellow creators. Shrine’s Legacy marks the debut release for their studio, Positive Concept Games. After several years in development and bolstered by a successful Kickstarter campaign, the title is finally ready to launch.
To celebrate the upcoming release, we sat down with Alan and Joseph for an extensive interview. We discussed everything from their diverse inspirations—ranging from Chrono Trigger to Hollow Knight—to the gameplay mechanics and story of Shrine’s Legacy, as well as their plans for future platform releases.
