Like a Dragon Studio: Conflict Fuels Creativity
The Fiery Forge of Like a Dragon
Series director Ryosuke Horii shared that disagreements among team members are not just common, but actively encouraged. These "in-fights," he explained, are a vital part of the creative process. Horii emphasized that the role of a planner is to mediate these conflicts, guiding the arguments towards constructive solutions.
"A lack of debate results in a mediocre final product," Horii stated. "Therefore, productive conflict is always welcome." He stressed that the key is a positive outcome, with planners responsible for steering discussions towards fruitful conclusions. The goal is "healthy and productive fights," leading to a superior game.
Horii further clarified that the studio values quality over team allegiance. Ideas are judged solely on their merit, regardless of their origin. Furthermore, the studio isn't afraid to reject subpar concepts. "We mercilessly dismiss poor ideas," Horii said, highlighting the importance of robust debate and constructive "battles" in the pursuit of excellence.
