After 15 years at Sledgehammer Games, Call of Duty multiplayer creative director Greg Reisdorf has departed. His tenure spanned numerous Call of Duty titles, beginning with Modern Warfare 3 (2011). Reisdorf played a pivotal role in the development of 2023's Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer, including its live seasonal content and modes.
Reisdorf's journey at Sledgehammer Games, established in 2009, encompassed key contributions to various Call of Duty installments. His involvement extended beyond Sledgehammer's own projects, encompassing collaborations with Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Raven Software on titles such as 2024's Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Warzone.
In a January 13th Twitter announcement, Reisdorf detailed his career highlights. His early work on Modern Warfare 3 included the memorable Scorched Earth campaign mission and a pivotal scene in the Blood Brothers mission. He also contributed significantly to the "boots on the ground" era of Call of Duty, shaping gameplay mechanics in Advanced Warfare (boost jumps, dodging, tactical reloads) and designing unique weapons and maps. He openly discussed his reservations about Advanced Warfare's "Pick 13" system, expressing a preference for reward-based streaks that don't restrict essential weapon choices.
Reisdorf reflected on his contributions to Call of Duty: WW2, noting the initial controversy surrounding the weapon class restrictions and expressing relief at their swift reversal. His work on Call of Duty: Vanguard included the design of both discovery and classic three-lane maps, emphasizing his preference for fun, engaging gameplay over strict military realism.
His final project, 2023's Modern Warfare 3, saw him oversee multiplayer map development, including the reimagining of classic Modern Warfare 2 maps with subtle additions (like Shepherd's skull in Rust). As creative director, he spearheaded the creation of numerous live seasonal modes, exceeding 20 throughout the game's post-launch support. Reisdorf's announcement suggests a continued career within the gaming industry.
