Digital Foundry's technical analysts have unveiled the final hardware specifications for the Nintendo Switch 2, noting that the GameChat functionality reportedly imposes a "substantial toll" on system resources—enough to raise concerns among developers.
During last month’s Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo introduced the Switch 2's GameChat feature, activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con controller.
Players can spectate each other playing the same or different games and, using an integrated camera, even see one another. A built-in microphone further enhances the experience, performing reliably across various gaming setups. The C button's chat menu is designed as a comprehensive multiplayer tool, potentially marking Nintendo's most impactful online initiative in years.
According to Digital Foundry, Nintendo offers developers a GameChat testing utility that simulates API latency and L3 cache misses encountered during actual use. This allows developers to evaluate performance without running live GameChat sessions.
This leads to the question: does enabling GameChat affect in-game performance for players? If GameChat operates within its allocated system resources, performance should remain consistent. However, the very existence of a GameChat emulation tool implies some degree of performance impact that developers must account for.
As Digital Foundry phrased it: "We're eager to observe how GameChat might influence game performance, as this appears to be a point of discussion among developers." A definitive answer will only arrive when the Switch 2 launches on June 5.
In the same report, Digital Foundry confirmed the Switch 2's finalized tech specs. The system reserves 3GB of memory for its operations, leaving 9GB available for games. For comparison, the original Switch reserves 0.8GB, with 3.2GB allocated to games. That’s a notable portion of the Switch 2’s resources not available for gaming. As is standard with consoles, developers also don’t have access to the full GPU capabilities, as some are reserved for system functions.

The Switch 2 is equipped with a 7.9-inch wide color gamut LCD screen capable of 1080p (1920x1080) output. This is a considerable improvement over the original Switch’s 6.2-inch display, the Switch OLED’s 7-inch screen, and the Switch Lite’s 5.5-inch screen.
It also supports HDR10 and VRR at up to 120 Hz, enabling games to run at up to 120fps depending on the title and display setup.
When docked, the Switch 2 can output games at 4K (3840x2160) and 60fps, or 1080p/1440p (1920x1080/2560x1440) at 120fps. These enhanced visuals are powered by a "custom NVIDIA processor."
Digital Foundry's detailed specifications reveal, which is highly informative, shares many more technical insights.
