Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Other Asynchronous Features Enhanced
FromSoftware has confirmed a significant departure from the traditional Soulsborne formula for its upcoming title, Elden Ring Nightreign. Unlike its predecessor, Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a pragmatic one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-centric design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the messaging system, a hallmark of previous FromSoftware titles.
The asynchronous messaging system, a beloved feature allowing players to leave helpful (or misleading!) messages for others, has been a key element in fostering community engagement in the Soulsborne series. However, Ishizaki explained that maintaining this feature would clash with Nightreign's streamlined, intense gameplay experience.
Preserving Asynchronous Gameplay Elements
Despite the removal of the messaging system, FromSoftware intends to enhance other asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will return, offering players even more insights into other players' deaths and allowing for ghost looting.
A 'Compressed' RPG Experience
The omission of the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign as a "compressed RPG." The game's three-day structure reflects this ambition to deliver a consistently intense and varied experience with minimal downtime.
Nightreign's release is targeted for 2025, as revealed during The Game Awards 2024, though a precise release date remains unannounced.
