Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer joined Double Fine Studio Head Tim Schafer in a moderated panel at the Paley International Council Summit in Palo Alto, California. The session, "Big Ideas, Small Games: Creativity Beyond the Blockbuster," was moderated by Idilio CEO Gabriela Tafur. When asked about Xbox's use of AI, Spencer noted that the company does leverage the technology, though perhaps not in the way many would assume.
"Currently, our main AI applications focus on securing and protecting our networks," Spencer explained, referencing Xbox Live's voice and text chat systems. "The scale of interactions is now so vast that human moderation alone isn't sufficient. We rely on AI to monitor topics and conversations, especially to safeguard child accounts. Parents or guardians can set controls over who can communicate with those accounts. While this might not be the most glamorous application of AI, it’s something I strongly believe in."
Still, Spencer also addressed the broader question of AI in the creative development of games. "When it comes to creativity, I leave those decisions entirely to our development teams," he said. "Creative teams naturally adopt tools that simplify their work. Imposing top-down mandates to use specific tools rarely leads to success. We provide access to tools and allow adoption to happen organically."
"On the creative side, I really leave it up to the teams," Spencer reiterated.
He then shifted the discussion to how AI could enhance game discovery. "One interesting area you've mentioned is discovery—how players find their next favorite game," he told Tafur. "We're exploring whether AI tools—though not yet in active use—could help recommend titles based on your past interests, highlighting games you might not have discovered otherwise."
"On the production side, where many assume AI will play a big role, we don’t have set targets for that in our model," he continued. "I'm more interested in how AI can support creative pacing and allow us to experiment with more ideas before committing to our next project. For now, our AI use remains more operational than creative."
