S-GAME Addresses "Nobody Needs Xbox" Controversy Surrounding Phantom Blade Zero
S-GAME, the studio behind the anticipated titles Phantom Blade Zero and Black Myth: Wukong, has officially responded to a recent controversy sparked by comments attributed to an anonymous source at ChinaJoy 2024. The initial reports, stemming from various media outlets, suggested a Phantom Blade Zero developer had made disparaging remarks about the Xbox platform.
The controversy began with a Chinese news outlet reporting on statements allegedly made by a developer, translated by fans as expressing a lack of interest in Xbox. This was further amplified by outlets like Aroged and, notably, Gameplay Cassi, whose translation of the statement as "nobody needs this platform" significantly escalated the situation.
S-GAME's official Twitter(X) statement refutes these claims as not representative of their company values. The statement emphasizes their commitment to broad accessibility for Phantom Blade Zero, explicitly stating that no platforms have been ruled out. They highlight their ongoing efforts in development and publishing to maximize player reach.
While S-GAME didn't directly address the anonymous source's authenticity, the underlying concern regarding Xbox's market share in Asia holds some weight. Xbox sales figures in regions like Japan significantly trail those of PlayStation and Nintendo, and distribution challenges in Southeast Asia further complicate the platform's presence.
Speculation regarding an exclusive deal with Sony, fueled by previous statements acknowledging Sony's support, has also been addressed. S-GAME has denied any exclusive partnership, reiterating their intention to release Phantom Blade Zero on PC in addition to PlayStation 5.
Despite the lack of explicit confirmation for an Xbox release, S-GAME's response leaves the possibility open, effectively quelling the controversy while maintaining strategic ambiguity.
