Itch.io has unexpectedly removed vast quantities of NSFW content from its storefront's browsing and search functions, effectively hiding thousands of adult-oriented games overnight.
Payment Processor Pressure Forces Immediate Action
The abrupt decision stems from what Itch.io describes as "critical" pressure from its payment providers. The platform issued a statement explaining it had to act immediately without prior warning to developers, resulting in numerous titles being abruptly pulled from sale.
This development follows Valve's recent sweeping removal of adult games from Steam just last week, accompanied by updated policies prohibiting content violating "payment processor standards." Some users had previously reported temporary PayPal purchase restrictions on Steam.
The No Mercy Controversy
"Our payment processors recently scrutinized certain content hosted on itch.io," the platform stated. "The controversy stems from April's No Mercy incident - a game temporarily available that depicted extreme sexual violence and incest. Advocacy group Collective Shout subsequently launched campaigns targeting both Steam and itch.io."
The short-lived No Mercy game became a flashpoint for politicians and activists, leading to its rapid removal. Collective Shout has continued pressuring platforms to delist games containing sexual assault content, claiming success when Valve removed over 400 such titles following their campaigns targeting Mastercard, Visa and PayPal.
Platform Stability vs Content Availability
"Maintaining payment processing capabilities is essential for all our creators," Itch.io explained. "To sustain operations as an inclusive marketplace, we must prioritize compliance with payment partners' requirements."
The platform acknowledged the suddenness of its actions: "This rapidly evolving situation demanded immediate action to protect our payment infrastructure. Unfortunately, providing advance notice wasn't feasible. We regret the abrupt disruption and apologize to affected creators."
Community Reactions and Collateral Damage
Users estimate over 20,000 adult games have been impacted, criticizing the move as reactive and disproportionate. Some report losing access to previously purchased downloadable content.
Unlike Steam's targeted removals, Itch.io plans a "comprehensive content audit" before implementing "new compliance measures," suggesting some currently hidden games may return. However, this sweeping action has inadvertently caught non-pornographic adult-rated games exploring sensitive themes, including award-winning titles like Consume Me - an autobiographical indie game about eating disorders.
The platform confirmed some games will be permanently unavailable, with affected developers receiving notifications shortly.
