The full impact of Microsoft's significant workforce reductions is now becoming apparent, as Blizzard confirms that its mobile title, Warcraft Rumble, will no longer receive new content, with developers reporting they have been let go.
Warcraft Rumble represented a major effort by Blizzard to expand the Warcraft franchise into the highly profitable mobile gaming market. Initially developed starting in 2016, the game launched globally in 2023 as a free-to-play tower defense real-time strategy title, taking inspiration from popular games like Clash of Clans. A PC version was released later in the same year.
In an official blog post, Blizzard acknowledged that Warcraft Rumble "struggled to gain the momentum needed to meet our long-term success goals," and noted that recent initiatives to boost player engagement were insufficient to justify ongoing content development.
This announcement is part of broader cutbacks at Microsoft, which eliminated 4% of its workforce—amounting to roughly 9,000 employees. Although most job losses occurred outside the gaming division, Xbox studios were notably affected. Rare's anticipated title Everwild, for instance, was canceled, along with the planned reboot of Perfect Dark. The Initiative studio was also shut down.
Other divisions also faced challenges: Candy Crush creator King saw major staff cuts, as did Bethesda's European branches. An unannounced MMO project from ZeniMax Online Studios, the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online, was scrapped, and its development team was dissolved. Additional reports suggest layoffs occurred at Forza developer Turn 10 and multiple studios involved in the Call of Duty franchise. Microsoft has since refuted rumors that Xbox head Phil Spencer intends to step down following the next-generation Xbox launch.
Blizzard client engineer Alex Apple posted on LinkedIn to confirm being laid off "together with the entire Warcraft Rumble team." Other developers associated with the game shared comparable experiences.

In its official statement, Blizzard assured players that Warcraft Rumble will remain accessible, though updates will be limited to routine in-game events and necessary bug fixes.
Dear Warcraft Rumble Community,
We're sharing an important announcement regarding the future of Warcraft Rumble. After careful consideration, we've reached a very difficult decision. Going forward, we will maintain support for Rumble through updates centered on regular in-game events and technical improvements, but no additional content will be produced.
Development of Warcraft Rumble began nine years ago as a tribute to the world of Azeroth. It launched in 2023, shaped by feedback from dedicated players worldwide and the hard work of a committed development team—some of whom continue to work on Rumble or other Blizzard projects, while others we have regrettably had to say goodbye to. Since its release, Rumble has faced challenges in aligning with our vision for its sustained success. The team has actively listened to player input, adjusted priorities in key areas, and explored various directions. While these efforts demonstrated some positive momentum, they ultimately weren't enough to secure the game's long-term viability.
Throughout this transition, our focus remains on supporting our colleagues. We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone at Blizzard and within the community who helped bring Warcraft Rumble to life and shared in the unique enjoyment it offers. Your passion and constructive feedback have been deeply valued.
The player community responded to the news with a sense of disappointment, though many expressed little surprise given the game's trajectory over the past two years. Many are now saying their farewells to Warcraft Rumble and its community, while sending supportive messages to the developers impacted by these changes.
