Server wipes have been a core part of Escape from Tarkov's DNA since its 2017 launch, but this week's reset has sparked unprecedented backlash among players.
Dubbed the "Hardcore Wipe," the latest update dramatically increases difficulty by removing key quests and maps while slowing progression to a crawl. Many veterans find themselves struggling to regain their pre-wipe power levels in what's being called the most punishing reset yet.
While developer Battlestate Games claims to be "monitoring player feedback closely" since the July 9 update, tensions boiled over when studio head Nikita Buyanov fired back at criticism with an expletive-laden response. After telling one detractor to "shut the f**k up," Buyanov later walked back his comments, tweeting that all feedback matters - though the damage was done.
The community remains deeply divided. "Unless they tweak some stuff fast, as in 1-3 days fast I think most of the playerbase will quit this wipe," lamented one player. "They have gone too far hardcore and removed most of what makes Tarkov... Tarkov." Buyanov dismissed the criticism, replying: "I totally disagree with you. Seems like you never played early Tarkov."
On Reddit, frustration reached new heights as hundreds upvoted posts about uninstalling the game. "Finally the true 1.0 update, escaping from Tarkov IRL," joked one user, while another shared: "Turned on the PC. Saw that they actually implemented transit only, no tasks, and everything is dummy expensive. I actually turned off the PC..."
Technical issues compounded players' frustrations. "Load into customs, wait 30 seconds, transit to interchange... see zero loot and then die to silent killa because 100% spawn rates," described one exasperated player. Others like a Twitter user argued: "Your game lost identity cause you tried to please everyone. Listening to streamers ruined this game for you."
The studio has since restored quests and acknowledged transit system problems they're "working on." Some players maintain a more optimistic outlook, with one advising to "Ignore the haters," while others appreciate the renewed challenge.
For the uninitiated, Escape from Tarkov blends hardcore FPS and RPG elements in its ruthless survival experience. Set in a war-torn Russian city, the game permanently removes all gear upon death - a punishing mechanic that's now been amplified by the controversial wipe.
