GTA 6 Delay: Rockstar's History of Postponements Continues

Author : Aaron Update:Jun 14,2025

Delays are often frustrating, especially when you're eagerly anticipating a major game release. However, history has shown us that delays—when handled with care—can lead to something truly special. This is particularly true in the world of art and creativity, where rushing a project can result in mediocrity. Games like *Duke Nukem 3D* serve as cautionary tales, but more often than not, taking extra time leads to excellence. How many times have you played through an unfinished or rushed title and wished the developers had simply taken more time? If that thought resonates with you, then you understand why delays aren't always bad news.

GTA 6 has officially been delayed, and while it might sting at first, this pause could very well be the best thing for the game. Rockstar Games has a long-standing tradition of delaying titles until they’re fully polished and ready for players—a practice that places them among elite studios like Nintendo who prioritize quality over deadlines. The result? Masterpieces that redefine gaming experiences.

As someone who has followed the *Grand Theft Auto* series since its earliest days—back when we hosted four-player LAN parties playing the original PC version—I’ve seen the evolution firsthand. From obscure entries like *London 1969* to modern masterworks like *GTA V* and *Red Dead Redemption 2*, Rockstar’s games have consistently improved with time. And yes, most of them were delayed. But each delay brought a richer, more refined experience. Below is a look at every major delay in the GTA series (and one notable Red Dead title) and how those delays helped create some of the greatest games ever made.

Grand Theft Auto III

The September 11 attacks deeply affected New York City, where Rockstar North's offices were located just a few blocks from the World Trade Center. In the aftermath, Take-Two Interactive announced a short delay for *Grand Theft Auto III*. Then-Marketing VP Terry Donovan explained:

"Our decision is based on two factors: firstly, it has been a little difficult to get work done in downtown Manhattan in the last week since basic communications infrastructure has been intermittent at best, and secondly we felt that a full content review of all our titles and the marketing materials we use to represent them was absolutely necessary... Certain small contextual references and gameplay instances no longer felt appropriate."

Though only minor changes were made, the delay ensured that players wouldn’t be engaging in chaotic gameplay involving emergency vehicles so soon after such a tragic event. It was a sensitive and smart move.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Both *Vice City* and *San Andreas* received seven-day delays, though for different reasons. For *Vice City*, the delay was logistical—Rockstar wanted to manufacture additional discs to meet overwhelming demand following the success of *GTA III*. For *San Andreas*, the delay was intentional, giving developers extra time to polish what would become one of the longest and most detailed entries in the series.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and Chinatown Wars

Even handheld entries in the series weren’t immune to delays. *Vice City Stories* for PSP was delayed by two weeks in North America and even longer in Europe. Meanwhile, *Chinatown Wars* for DS faced a two-month delay before its eventual release. Despite the wait, both games were critically acclaimed and remain cult favorites among fans. *Chinatown Wars* in particular is often cited as one of the best entries in the franchise.

Will GTA 6 Release on PC at the Same Time as Console Now It's Been Delayed to May 2026?

Choose your answer:

Grand Theft Auto IV

After redefining open-world gaming with *GTA III*, expectations for *GTA IV* were sky-high. With the move to next-gen consoles and a completely new engine, Rockstar aimed higher than ever. Unfortunately, development took longer than expected, resulting in several months of delays. As Rockstar's Sam Hause explained:

"The new consoles [PS3 and 360] are allowing us to create the Grand Theft Auto game we always dreamed about... The game is huge and is pushing the hardware platforms to their absolute limits."

That patience paid off. When *GTA IV* finally launched, it was hailed as a technical marvel and a narrative triumph.

Grand Theft Auto V

Play

Originally scheduled for spring 2013, *GTA V* didn’t launch until September. Rockstar acknowledged the disappointment but assured fans the delay was necessary for polish. Their message read:

"GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require."

They were right. *GTA V* became the best-selling console game of all time and remains a cornerstone of Rockstar’s legacy.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Although not part of the GTA series, *Red Dead Redemption 2* deserves mention due to its connection to Rockstar’s culture of perfectionism. The game was delayed twice—first in spring 2017 and again in February 2018—to allow for further refinement. Rockstar stated:

"We require a little extra time for polish… We sincerely thank you for your patience and hope that when you get to play the game, you will agree the wait will have been worth it."

And it was. *RDR2* is widely regarded as one of the greatest games ever made, offering unmatched storytelling and immersion.
