Hideo Kojima's much-anticipated spiritual successor to Metal Gear, Physint, is still a distant dream, with a release timeline set at "another five or six years" away. This revelation comes directly from Kojima, who shared his thoughts with Le Film Francais, emphasizing that his dream of directing a movie remains on hold until he completes this new "action espionage" game—his first since the well-publicized split from Konami in 2015.
Kojima has been inundated with offers since leaving Konami, eager to explore new projects within his independent studio. In an interview translated by ResetEra member Red Kong XIX, he highlighted his current commitments: "Besides Death Stranding 2, there's also Physint in development. That will take me another five or six years."
However, the allure of cinema remains strong for Kojima, who grew up immersed in films. "But maybe after that, I could finally decide to take on a film," he mused. "Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!"
PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst first announced Physint in January 2024, but details have been scarce since. Initially, Kojima hinted at the project being akin to a movie, but later clarified on X/Twitter that its "look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, sound, etc… are all at the next level of ‘Digital Entertainment’ that could be called a ‘movie.’"
Physint is just one of several ventures Kojima Productions is currently tackling. Alongside Physint, they are working on Death Stranding 2 and OD, a new IP developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios, featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, Kojima is involved in A24's film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is slated for release next month on June 26. The franchise's star, actor Norman Reedus, recently shared an exciting detail about the upcoming film adaptation, confirming to IGN that he would indeed play himself in the movie.
In a fascinating twist, Kojima recently revealed a trove of discarded game ideas, including a concept for a ‘Forgetting Game’ where the protagonist loses important information and abilities if players take extended breaks. He also disclosed that he left behind a USB stick filled with game ideas for his staff to explore after his passing.
