11 bit studios has unveiled Frostpunk 1886, a ground-up reimagining of their acclaimed 2018 survival city-builder slated for a 2027 release.
The Polish developer is rebuilding the original Frostpunk experience using Unreal Engine 5, announcing this ambitious project just months after launching Frostpunk 2. If the 2027 timeline holds, this remake will arrive nearly ten years after the original game changed the strategy landscape.
Frostpunk transports players to an alternative 19th-century world devastated by volcanic winter. As a steampunk-era city leader, you must balance resource management with moral decisions while exploring the frozen wasteland for survivors and supplies.
IGN awarded the original Frostpunk an exceptional 9/10, praising it as "a masterful blend of thematic depth and strategic gameplay that delivers a uniquely compelling, if occasionally opaque, survival experience."
Its sequel Frostpunk 2 earned a strong 8/10 from IGN, with reviewers noting: "While sacrificing some intimacy for greater political complexity, this refined city-builder successfully reimagines its icy apocalypse for a grander scale."
11 bit confirms ongoing support for Frostpunk 2 with planned DLC and console versions, even as development begins on Frostpunk 1886.
The studio explained their transition from their proprietary Liquid Engine: "Having powered both Frostpunk and This War of Mine, we've long sought new technological foundations to honor our legacy while pushing boundaries."
"Frostpunk 1886 represents both a homecoming and evolution," they continued. "While Frostpunk 2 expands the universe forward, this project re-examines our origins - giving veterans new challenges while welcoming newcomers to New London's brutal utopia.
"More than a visual upgrade, Frostpunk 1886 introduces fresh mechanics, expanded law systems, and a completely new Purpose narrative path. The '1886' designation marks the fateful year when the Great Storm reshaped our world forever.
"Unreal Engine 5 finally enables our long-promised mod support while creating an expandable platform for future content - technological limitations that constrained our original vision.
The studio envisions "parallel futures where Frostpunk 2 and 1886 evolve as complementary experiences - twin visions of survival against nature's cruelest elements."
11 bit also confirmed development continues on The Alters, scheduled for release this June.
