Civilization 7 developer Firaxis has announced the pivotal Update 1.1.1, which arrives at a crucial juncture for the recently released strategy game. Currently, Civilization 7 is experiencing lower player numbers on Steam compared to its predecessors, Civilization 6 and even the 15-year-old Civilization 5.
On Valve’s platform, Civilization 7 has seen a 24-hour peak of 16,921 concurrent players, which is insufficient to rank within Steam's top 100 most-played games. In contrast, Civilization 5, launched in 2010, achieved a 24-hour peak of 17,423 players, while the more recent Civilization 6 from 2016 reached a peak of 40,676 players within the same timeframe. This suggests that a significant portion of the Civilization fanbase is still loyal to Civilization 6.
In a detailed post on Steam, Firaxis outlined the "additions and refinements" that players can expect from Update 1.1.1, which include:
- Quick Move Functionality
- New Natural Wonder: Mount Everest
- Additional UI Updates & Polish
- Settlement & Commander Renaming
- And more!
Lead designer Ed Beach provided an in-depth walkthrough of these changes in a video, promising full patch notes soon.
Civilization 7 Update 1.1.1 Patch Notes:
Quick Move: Now an optional setting that can be toggled in the game’s menu, allowing units to move to their destination instantly for a faster gameplay experience.
Map Generation: A new start position option has been introduced. The default setting for single-player games is now "Standard," offering more varied and less predictable continents, similar to Civilization 6. For multiplayer, the "Balanced" setting remains to ensure a level playing field with consistent maps.
Renaming: Players can now rename settlements and commanders, adding a personal touch to their gameplay. Additionally, a restart feature allows players to regenerate the map with new seeds while retaining their chosen leader and civilization.
UI Improvements: The city and town panel now remains open during purchases, a new notification alerts players when a city is under attack, new indicators for crises have been added, and resource tooltips have been enhanced. Significant pacing changes have also been implemented.
New Content: Alongside the update, Bulgaria joins Nepal and new leader Simón Bolívar in the paid Crossroads of the World Collection, available starting March 25.
Civilization 7 has sparked debate among series veterans due to its new mechanics and has faced challenges on Steam, where it holds a 'mixed' user review rating and received a 7/10 from IGN. In a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative feedback but expressed optimism about the game's future, suggesting that the "legacy Civ audience" would grow to appreciate it over time. He described Civilization 7's early performance as "very encouraging."
