Sony’s June 2025 State of Play opened with an unexpected reveal: Lumines Arise, from Tetris Effect creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi.
The game is scheduled to launch in fall 2025 for PlayStation 5 and PS VR2, with a demo arriving this summer. Watch the debut trailer below:
In a PlayStation Blog post, Enhance Director Takashi Ishihara explained that Lumines Arise was designed from the ground up as a true successor to the classic Lumines puzzle series, which began on PlayStation Portable 20 years ago, and will offer optional PS VR2 support.
"Lumines Arise on PlayStation 5 with optional PS VR2 compatibility goes beyond a typical puzzle game—we want it to resonate emotionally," Ishihara stated.
"You begin in darkness during the opening stage, which was briefly shown in today’s reveal trailer, and each of the game’s 30+ stages evokes a unique and layered emotional experience. From dense jungle settings and vibrant underwater worlds, to snakes poised to attack, to digital-inspired realms like Tokyo’s neon streets and the infinite backdrop of outer space. Each is enhanced with striking visuals designed to stimulate synesthesia.
"At its core lies an intuitive puzzle system. For newcomers to Lumines, here’s the basic idea: rotate and position a range of 2×2 blocks consisting of one or two colors, forming same-color squares. A Timeline sweeps across the screen in time with the driving soundtrack, removing completed squares along its path. This creates gentle time pressure, encouraging you to build larger squares for chain reactions and higher scores.
"As you aim to rack up combos, you must stay aware of the moving Timeline while the DualSense controller vibrates, the music surrounds you, and the vivid environments pull you deeper. That’s when you enter a flow state and the outside world disappears. Your heart pounds as your breath catches."
