This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, amassing a phenomenal game library that continues to see re-releases. While these titles challenged Nintendo's dominance years ago, they're now enjoyed across multiple platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlaySta-Show begin!
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a looming threat. Expect vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly less impressive, the collection is a must-have.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII catapulted Japanese RPGs into Western mainstream consciousness, becoming Square Enix's greatest triumph and a key driver of PlayStation's success. While the remake exists, the original FFVII offers a unique experience with its distinctive polygonal style. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. Although later entries became more eccentric, the original stands as a captivating adventure, less philosophical and more reminiscent of a G.I. Joe episode. Its engaging gameplay is a significant draw, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
Let's explore a niche classic. G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's shoot 'em up series into 3D. While the polygons haven't aged perfectly, their charm remains. The vibrant colors, innovative enemy capture mechanic, and imaginative bosses create a compelling shooter experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
To avoid an all-Square Enix list, I'll include only this and FFVII. Chrono Cross, despite following one of gaming's most beloved RPGs, carves its own path. While not reaching Chrono Trigger's heights, it boasts a clever, visually stunning world and a vast cast of characters (though some feel underdeveloped). It also features one of the best video game soundtracks ever.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
While I enjoy most Mega Man games, objectivity suggests Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 as the strongest entries for newcomers. X4 stands out for its cohesive design. The Legacy Collections offer a chance to form your own opinion.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
Sony published many non-owned titles. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with polished action. Remember, its creator is behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, hinting at a deceptively challenging experience.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Though originally on SEGA Saturn, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Created by Lunar developers, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure distinct from the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs of the time. Its satisfying combat system builds upon Game Arts' previous work.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
Lara Croft, a PlayStation icon, starred in five adventures. While quality varied, the original excels with its tomb-raiding focus over action. This collection lets you decide your favorite.
moon ($18.99)
Concluding with a hidden gem, moon, initially Japan-only, deconstructs the RPG genre. More an adventure game, it's arguably "punk" in its unconventional approach. While not consistently fun, its unique message makes it worthwhile.
This concludes the list. What are your favorite PlayStation 1 games on Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments! Thanks for reading!
