"Oblivion Remastered's 'Spookmane' Ghost Hunt: Community Seeks Spectral Horse Origins"

Author : Andrew Update:May 21,2025

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is filled with eerie elements like skeletons, spirits, and zombies, yet a mysterious 'ghost horse' has caught the attention of the community, unseen in both the original 2006 release and the 2025 remaster. The story unfolded when Reddit user TaricIsNotASupport shared a sighting of this spectral horse, sparking intrigue and a community-wide search.

"Uhhhh, guys, is this new?" TaricIsNotASupport posted, detailing their encounter. "So I was crafting stupid spells in Frostcrag Spire, as it's possibly my favorite way to have fun in this game. However, this time when I left the Cosy Chaos Spire that has divided this community so very much, I noticed something suuuuuuper strange in the distance. I did as any of us of the right mind would do and B-lined it over there like a maniac. To my amazement was this spectral horse with no name. I have played thousands of hours of the original Oblivion — and have already sunken over a hundred hours into the Remaster — yet this is the first I have ever seen this horse. I don’t know if it's something new that's been added, or if I've just missed out on it before and never knew."

TaricIsNotASupport called on the community for insights, leading to a digital ghost hunt. Players scoured the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages website for any mention of a spectral mount in the original game, but found nothing. In response to queries about interaction, TaricIsNotASupport confirmed the ability to ride and interact with the ghostly horse, dubbing it 'Spookmane.' Despite its ethereal form, Spookmane functions like any other horse in Oblivion, capable of fast travel and stabling.

Speculation abounds regarding Spookmane's origins. Some believe it could be a glitch, perhaps triggered by a misfired spell, given Bethesda's history with game bugs. ClaymoreBeatz commented, "Very weird, the wiki says there's only 2 unique horses, Shadowmere and unicorns. And there's no horse mods that I can see that do this so I highly doubt your lying about not being on PC, this is probably some sort of glitch that the new Remastered has or glitched magical effect. Armored horses names change to Armored horse I think so maybe it's an Armored horse that got hit by a spell and now its name and spell effect is glitched."

Others speculate that the developers at Bethesda and Virtuos might have hidden this ghost horse in Oblivion Remastered as a spooky Easter egg. While less likely, the possibility has fueled excitement about potential undiscovered secrets within the remaster.

The community is eager to replicate Spookmane's appearance, though no specific method has been identified yet. TaricIsNotASupport has embraced their new ghostly companion, pledging to continue their adventures with Spookmane. "This creature might be my favorite new friend I’ve made," they said. "Spookmane, you’re glorious and I love you."

Oblivion Remastered, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, boasts numerous enhancements. It runs at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, with significant improvements to leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. New dialogue, a proper third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology have also been introduced. These changes have been well-received, with some fans arguing that the game is more of a remake than a remaster, a point Bethesda has addressed.

As players delve into the remastered world, they're advised to tackle Kvatch early to avoid level scaling difficulties. Additionally, adventurous players have reportedly found ways to explore beyond Cyrodiil into regions like Valenwood, Skyrim, and Hammerfell, rumored to be the setting for The Elder Scrolls VI.
