Nintendo has stealthily included one of its most beloved recurring Easter eggs in Mario Kart World, a flagship launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2. Dedicated fans have uncovered Totaka's Song - a secret melody that has made surprise appearances across dozens of Nintendo games.
The Hidden Melody Returns
The musical Easter egg reveals itself subtly in Mario Kart World's character selection screen. Simply highlight Yoshi and let the green dinosaur idle long enough - eventually he'll begin humming Nintendo fans' favorite cryptic tune.
"I was browsing characters when I heard Mario humming absentmindedly," shared Reddit user charizardtelephone. "That got me thinking - what if Yoshi does something similar? After testing, there it was - unmistakably Totaka's Song!"
This 19-note melody originates from legendary composer Kazumi Totaka, who has quietly placed variations in numerous Nintendo titles he's worked on - including games where he voices Yoshi. The tune has surfaced everywhere from Animal Crossing to Pikmin and Wii Sports.
"It plays exactly like Mario Kart 8 - Yoshi hums the song when left idle," charizardtelephone explained regarding their discovery. "Such a cool callback that many might miss!"
Sprinting to Success
Mario Kart World is currently outpacing Breath of the Wild's physical sales from the original Switch launch in Japan. The racing title, available in Switch 2 bundles, marks Nintendo's first major hit for their new console. Next up is Donkey Kong Bananza, with details coming in this week's Nintendo Direct.
