If you tuned into the Xbox Games Showcase 2025 expecting Gears of War: E-Day news, you might have left disappointed. This year's presentation notably lacked updates on Microsoft's flagship franchises - with no reveals for Forza, Halo, or the anticipated Fable reboot.
Xbox head Phil Spencer confirmed Gears of War: E-Day will instead arrive in 2026 alongside the next Forza installment, coinciding with Xbox's 25th anniversary celebrations.
The next installment in Xbox's long-running Gears franchise was officially announced last year at Xbox Games Showcase 2024. Set 14 years before the original Gears of War, E-Day serves as a prequel exploring the origin story of fan-favorite characters Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, with John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro reprising their iconic voice roles.
Coalition studio head Mike Crump previously stated: "Gears of War: E-Day isn't just our next major release – it's a return to the core elements that define the Gears of War experience at its most authentic."
Earlier this year, development studio People Can Fly (known for Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgment) was announced as co-developers on E-Day alongside Xbox's internal studio The Coalition.
The showcase also included a teaser from Spencer hinting at Halo's long-awaited return, potentially involving a remaster of the original game. For complete coverage, check out our breakdown of all announcements from the June 2025 Xbox Games Showcase.
