HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 will portray Abby differently than in the game. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the muscular physique of the game's Abby because the show prioritizes drama over constant violent action. The show's Abby will be "physically more vulnerable," but possess a stronger spirit, according to showrunner Craig Mazin. This approach allows for a different exploration of Abby's formidable nature.
The show plans to adapt Part 2 across multiple seasons, unlike Season 1 which covered the first game. Season 2, comprising seven episodes, will conclude with a "natural breakpoint," leaving room for future seasons.
The negative online reaction to Abby's character in the game is acknowledged. Actress Isabel Merced (Dina) mentions the harassment faced by Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and Laura Bailey (Abby's voice actress), prompting extra security measures for Dever during filming. The reminder that Abby is a fictional character underscores the seriousness of the online abuse.
