Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has reached an impressive milestone, selling 2 million copies in just 12 days. This comes after the game sold 1 million copies within its first three days of release.
It's important to note that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was a day-one title on Game Pass, alongside Bethesda's Oblivion Remastered. This makes the sales achievement even more remarkable for French developer Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive.
"We've been amazed to see so many of you embark on this journey," a social media post stated. "We've experienced every step, every emotion, and every discovery right alongside you.
"To those who are just starting: welcome.
"Tomorrow is here."
When Bethesda surprise-released The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered around the same time as the launch of the RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, many assumed only one title would come out on top. Instead, both games found success and shared the spotlight.
In fact, Kepler reported that Oblivion's release did not negatively impact Clair Obscur. On the contrary, Clair Obscur benefited from the increased attention on the RPG genre sparked by Oblivion.
Matt Handrahan, senior portfolio manager at Kepler Interactive, told The Game Business last week: "We always recognized that Expedition 33 had a unique identity. During my time in the press, I viewed Western-style RPGs and Japanese-style RPGs as having distinct audiences. I knew many people who enjoyed Elder Scrolls but weren't necessarily interested in Final Fantasy, and vice versa.
"By the time of our launch, we had built our own momentum and felt confident we could stand alongside it. Other factors, like our price point and inclusion in Game Pass, meant we knew the game would generate significant interest. We were confident in that, and in our view, the launch went as well as it possibly could. Being released close to Oblivion didn’t hurt us at all. In many ways, I believe it drew more attention to high-quality RPGs that week, getting everyone thinking and talking about the genre."
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has performed so well that French President Macron commended the development team. Make sure to check out our guide for key tips to know before diving into the game.
