Over its three-millennium evolution, Chinese chess pieces and boards have undergone continual refinement while preserving traditional Chinese cultural influences. During gameplay, players experience tension between offense and defense, abstract strategies and concrete moves, whole-board perspectives and tactical maneuvers - creating an endlessly fascinating challenge.

Gameplay Fundamentals & Core Rules

Essential movement principles to remember:

The General (King) stays confined within the palace walls, while Advisors move diagonally within palace boundaries
Elephants traverse designated diagonal paths, and Knights move precisely in "L" shapes
Cannons capture by jumping over screens, while Chariots dominate straight paths
Soldiers advance single steps forward until crossing the river, when they gain sideways movement
