VoiceTra is an invaluable speech translation application designed to facilitate communication across different languages, particularly useful for travel-related conversations. Available for free and supporting 31 languages, VoiceTra employs high-precision speech recognition, translation, and speech synthesis technologies developed by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). This app not only translates your spoken words into various languages but also outputs the results in a synthesized voice, making it a perfect personal speech translator for enhancing travel experiences or welcoming visitors to Japan.

Features:

VoiceTra's standout feature is its ability to instantly switch translation directions, enabling seamless communication between two individuals speaking different languages on a single device. For languages without speech input support, text input is available. VoiceTra is ideally suited for a variety of travel scenarios, including:

• Transportation: Bus, train, rent-a-car, taxi, airport, transit
• Shopping: Restaurant, shopping, payment
• Hotel: Check-in, check-out, cancellation
• Sightseeing: Overseas travel, serving and supporting foreign customers

VoiceTra has also been recognized for its utility in disaster-prevention and disaster-related situations. While it can function as a dictionary for word lookups, the app is most effective when used to input sentences, as it interprets the context to provide accurate translations.

Restrictions and Considerations:

• An internet connection is required to use VoiceTra.
• Translation results may take time to display depending on network connectivity.
• Text input is available only for languages supported by the OS keyboard.
• Proper character display depends on the device having the appropriate fonts installed.
• The app's functionality may be affected if the server is down.
• Users are responsible for any communication fees, including potentially high international data roaming charges.

VoiceTra was developed for research purposes to test and improve speech translation technologies. While it can be tested for business use, continuous use should be directed towards private services licensed by NICT.
