Players & Cards

Tong-Its is exclusively for three players using a standard 52-card Anglo-American deck (no jokers). Card values: Ace (1pt), Jack/Queen/King (10pts each), number cards equal their face value.

Objective

The goal is to form valid sets/runs while minimizing unmatched cards through strategic drawing/discarding.

A run requires three+ consecutive same-suit cards (e.g., ♦4-♦5-♦6). Note: A-K-Q doesn't qualify as Ace ranks low.

A set comprises three/four same-rank cards (e.g., ♥8♣8♦8). Cards can't simultaneously belong to multiple combinations.

The Deal

Dealers rotate randomly initially, then pass to each hand's winner. Dealing proceeds counterclockwise: 13 cards to dealer, 12 to others, with remaining cards forming the stock.

The Play

Each turn involves these phases:

Draw Take either stock's top card or discard pile's top card (if it completes a meld, which must then be revealed).

Exposing Melds Voluntarily reveal valid sets/runs when drawing from stock. Opening requires showing at least one meld. Special rule: Concealed four-card sets may be placed face-down.

Laying off (sapaw) Optionally extend existing melds (yours or opponents'). Unlimited cards per turn. Block opponents' Draw phase by adding to their melds.

Discard Conclude turn by placing one card face-up on discard pile.
