FF9 Remake Rumors Persist, Prequel Book Confirmed

Final Fantasy IX Marks 25th Anniversary

Picture Book Now Available on Amazon Japan and Rakuten for 1,320 Yen

Celebrating its 25th anniversary since its original release on July 7, 2000, Final Fantasy IX welcomes a new picture book titled "Vivi and Grandpa On the Day of Departure." Crafted by Event Designer Kazuhiko Aoki and Character Designer Toshiyuki Itahana, this 44-page RPG prequel explores the story of the Black Mage Vivi and his adoptive grandfather Quan, set before Vivi's journey to the Kingdom of Alexandria.

This is the second Final Fantasy picture book from Aoki and Itahana, following their previous collaboration on "Chocobo and the Airship," which debuted in Japan in 2021 and globally in 2023. "Vivi and Grandpa On the Day of Departure" is available now in both digital and physical formats on Amazon Japan and Rakuten for 1,320 yen (approximately $9 USD).

Alongside the picture book, Square Enix has launched a wide array of Final Fantasy IX merchandise. While some items are exclusive to Japan, fans can find plush toys, apparel like Vivi's Hat, and a vinyl album featuring original and newly recorded tracks on the Square Enix online store. These items are also available at the Square Enix pop-up store in Osaka, with a Tokyo location opening on July 25, 2025.

Limited-Edition Final Fantasy IX and Zoff Collaboration Eyewear

Adding to the exclusive merchandise, Square Enix has also revealed a limited-edition eyewear collaboration with Japanese brand Zoff for the RPG's 25th anniversary. The collection features three distinct frame designs, each paired with exclusive glasses wipes and themed cases. Currently, fittings are exclusive to the following Zoff stores in Japan:

The in-store fitting period runs from July 7th through August 3rd. Online reservations for the collaboration event are set to begin in early July. Participating Zoff locations will also offer original capsule toys with collectible glasses wipes. Despite the excitement surrounding Final Fantasy IX's 25th anniversary, there has been no official discussion or announcement regarding a remaster or remake. Square Enix has instead focused on releasing a variety of new merchandise, giving long-time fans fresh ways to celebrate the classic title. However, with the anniversary date approaching and the release of a newly arranged vinyl album featuring re-recorded tracks, some fans remain hopeful for future developments.
