As confusion continues regarding Nintendo Switch 2 pricing (particularly in the fluctuating US market), new details reveal an additional cost many players may have overlooked. The Nintendo Switch 2 edition of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild won't include the Expansion Pass, requiring a separate $20 purchase for DLC access unless previously owned.
While this may seem obvious, the situation requires clarification. Since Nintendo Switch 2 game pricing details emerged last week, players have faced significant confusion about how transfers will work. Current information confirms that existing Switch owners of Breath of the Wild can play their purchased version on Switch 2—including any owned DLC—without issues.
However, a separate Nintendo Switch 2 Enhanced Edition offers visual and performance upgrades, achievements, and integration with the new "Zelda Notes" service in Nintendo Switch Online. Existing owners can purchase a $10 upgrade pack for these features, but they don't receive them automatically.
For new players purchasing Breath of the Wild directly for Switch 2, the Enhanced Edition costs $70—$10 more than the original launch price (effectively covering the base game and upgrade). But without the included Expansion Pass, accessing the DLC requires an additional $20, bringing the total to $90 for the complete experience.
Nintendo confirmed this to IGN, stating: "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition does not include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass DLC. That DLC is available as a separate purchase."
While this pricing aligns with what existing owners have paid (base game + DLC + upgrade), it contrasts with industry trends where publishers typically reduce prices for older titles or bundle DLC in enhanced editions. Paying $90 in 2024 for the definitive version of a 2017 game (originally released on Wii U) feels steep—especially alongside Mario Kart World's $80 price tag and the Switch 2's potential $450+ cost amid tariff uncertainty.
This may not impact most players, given Breath of the Wild's massive existing sales. But newcomers waiting for the Switch 2 version should factor in the Expansion Pass cost—alongside its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom—when budgeting for Nintendo's new system.
