The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the Yakuza series, Like a Dragon, will notably omit the beloved karaoke minigame, a staple of the franchise since its introduction in Yakuza 3 (2009). This decision, revealed by executive producer Erik Barmack, has sparked debate among fans.
While Barmack acknowledged the minigame's popularity – including the iconic "Baka Mitai" song's meme status – he cited the need to condense the extensive source material into a six-episode series as the reason for its exclusion. He hinted at the possibility of karaoke's inclusion in future seasons, particularly given lead actor Ryoma Takeuchi's fondness for karaoke.
The absence of karaoke has raised concerns that the series might sacrifice the comedic elements and quirky side stories that define the Yakuza franchise in favor of a more serious tone. This echoes the contrasting reception of recent video game adaptations; Fallout's success stemmed from its faithfulness, while Resident Evil's deviation drew significant criticism.
However, RGG Studio Director Masayoshi Yokoyama described the series as a "bold adaptation," aiming for a fresh experience rather than a simple recreation. He assured fans that the show will retain elements of the series' signature humor. The specifics remain undisclosed, leaving fans to anticipate a balance between faithful adaptation and creative interpretation.
