Valve Planning to Slow Down Deadlock Updates

Deadlock 2025: Fewer, Bigger Updates from Valve

Valve has announced a shift in its update strategy for Deadlock in 2025, prioritizing larger, less frequent patches over the consistent smaller updates of 2024. This change, detailed on the official Deadlock Discord, aims to streamline development and allow more thorough testing and implementation of significant changes. While this might disappoint some players accustomed to the regular content drops, it promises more substantial updates with a greater impact.

Deadlock, Valve's free-to-play MOBA/hero shooter, launched on Steam earlier this year after early gameplay leaks. It quickly gained traction, establishing itself in a competitive market that includes titles like Marvel Rivals. Deadlock's unique steampunk aesthetic and polished gameplay have contributed to its success. However, maintaining the current two-week update cycle has proven challenging for Valve's development team.

According to PCGamesN, Valve developer Yoshi explained the reasoning behind the change: the previous schedule hindered internal iteration and didn't allow sufficient time for changes to settle before the next update. The new approach will feature larger patches released less frequently, functioning more like significant events. Hotfixes will still be deployed as needed. The recent winter update, which deviated from the usual balance patch format, serves as a preview of this new direction, suggesting a potential increase in limited-time events and special game modes in the future.

Deadlock currently boasts 22 playable characters, further expanded to 30 with the addition of 8 heroes in Hero Labs mode. Its innovative anti-cheat measures and diverse character roster have also contributed to its positive reception. While an official release date remains unconfirmed, Valve promises further news and substantial updates for Deadlock in 2025.
