FromSoftware has unveiled additional details about its upcoming Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods. The collaboration with Nintendo appears to have influenced not only the game's stylistic direction but also led to an unusually adorable design for The Duskbloods' hub guardian.
The trailer showcased during this week's Switch 2 Direct concluded with a striking image: a glyph-covered winged rat staring directly at viewers. Many fans questioned this peculiar creature's significance. Surprisingly, this rat serves as your central hub companion.
"This character fulfills a similar purpose to the fire keepers in Dark Souls. They reside in the hub area, offering players guidance and support," explained director Hidetaka Miyazaki in a Nintendo interview.
"You might say we embraced a more Nintendo-inspired approach to honor our partnership."
When pressed for clarification, Miyazaki elaborated: "We experimented with cuter designs this time. Though I should mention this particular character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughs)."
FromSoftware's shrine guardians traditionally play pivotal roles throughout players' adventures. Iconic figures like Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll become recurring touchpoints that assist with progression.
Given The Duskbloods' PvPvE nature, the winged rat's exact guidance mechanics remain intriguing. Miyazaki teased that developers incorporated "numerous fresh concepts," suggesting players should anticipate surprises when the game launches on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
