Cameras have officially started rolling on DC’s highly anticipated film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, marking a major milestone for the upcoming release. To mark the occasion, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn took to Bluesky to share the first glimpse of Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El—better known as Supergirl.
In his post, Gunn confirmed that filming has begun at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, with Craig Gillespie (director of Cruella and I, Tonya) at the helm. While the photo shared isn’t a full character reveal, it features Alcock seated in her actor’s chair on set—making it the first official behind-the-scenes look at the production and a symbolic introduction to her Supergirl era.

“Thrilled to see camera roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El,” Gunn wrote, expressing his excitement for the project.
The film is heavily inspired by the critically acclaimed graphic novel Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Nogueira. The story follows Ruthye Marye Knoll, an alien girl who seeks justice for her father’s murder by the ruthless villain Krem of the Yellow Hills. She turns to Supergirl for help, setting off a powerful tale of revenge, loss, and heroism. The comic was nominated for “Best Limited Series” at the 2022 Eisner Awards and has been widely praised for its emotional depth and stunning artwork—making it a compelling foundation for the film.
Joining Alcock in the cast are Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, and David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Supergirl’s father. Emily Beecham will portray her mother, adding to the strong ensemble. Notably, Jason Momoa has been recast in the new DC Universe as the intergalactic antihero Lobo, further expanding the franchise’s roster of characters.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to be the second film in the new DC Universe slate, following the release of James Gunn’s Superman this summer. It stands as a key pillar in the rebuilding of the DC cinematic narrative under Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran.
Other projects in development include The Batman – Part II, which may exist on the fringes of Gunn’s main continuity, and a rumored Clayface movie directed by Mike Flanagan.
