Jon Watts, director of Tom Holland's Spider-Man trilogy, was originally slated to helm The Fantastic Four: First Steps – a prospect that excited fans given his masterful handling of Marvel's web-slinger. However, Watts shocked many when he stepped away from the project, now revealing for the first time that he simply lacked the creative energy after his exhaustive Spider-Man experience throughout the pandemic.
The Pandemic's Creative Toll
"The emotional toll of navigating COVID protocols while maintaining creative vision and ensuring cast/crew safety – where mistakes could literally cost lives – combined with challenging post-production demands proved overwhelming," Watts confessed during a June 26 masterclass at Malta's Mediterrane Film Festival.
He elaborated on the post-production hurdles: "Visual effects work became incredibly complex with international vendors facing disrupted supply chains. Completing effects through traditional methods grew increasingly difficult."
A Necessary Retreat
The filmmaker, who recently produced and contributed story elements to Final Destination: Bloodlines, initially committed to First Steps between Spider-Man sequels. But when pre-production began in earnest, Watts recognized his depleted state.
"The COVID-related pressures layered atop normal blockbuster demands made me realize I couldn't deliver the quality this project deserved," he explained. "Marvel completely understood – having witnessed my exhaustion firsthand during our satisfying but draining collaboration."
Watts expressed enthusiasm for Matt Shakman's upcoming vision while admitting it will feel "completely surreal" watching another director's take on material he once envisioned.
Anticipating Marvel's First Family
The Fantastic Four: First Steps – starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Ralph Ineson – premieres July 25th, introducing Marvel's foundational superteam to the MCU.
