Sony has recently unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, which originated from the renowned developer Bungie, known for Destiny and Marathon. Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, expressed high enthusiasm for teamLFG's ambitious incubation project.
The name teamLFG, short for 'Looking For Group,' reflects the studio's focus on social gaming. Their debut project is a team-based action game that uniquely blends elements from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and even "frog-type games." The game is set in a lighthearted, comedic world within a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.
teamLFG's mission is to foster friendship, community, and a sense of belonging among players. They aim to create an environment where players can easily connect with teammates and enjoy memorable moments together. The studio emphasizes the importance of player interaction, hoping to inspire players to create their own stories and legends within the game.
The studio plans to build immersive multiplayer worlds that players can engage with for countless hours, focusing on action-packed gameplay that can be learned, played, and mastered. They intend to involve their community in the development process through early access playtests, ensuring they can adapt and grow the game based on player feedback, both before and after launch.
teamLFG's project emerged from Bungie amidst significant layoffs in 2023 and 2024, following Sony's acquisition and Bungie's struggle to meet financial targets with Destiny 2. These layoffs led to the spin-off of the incubation project, with affected employees being integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
In related news, Bungie has fully revealed their extraction shooter, Marathon, and confirmed the future roadmap for Destiny 2. However, they have no plans for Destiny 3 and have canceled a spinoff project called Payback.
