Virtua Fighter Returns: New In-Engine Footage Unveiled

Sega has treated fans to a fresh look at the upcoming Virtua Fighter installment, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades of relative dormancy. The new in-engine footage, shown at NVIDIA's CES 2025 keynote, offers a glimpse into the game's visual style and direction.

The last major Virtua Fighter release was the 2021 Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown remaster (coming to Steam January 2025), a significant gap since the last entirely new entry in the series. This new title promises a complete departure from previous iterations.

The showcased video, while not actual gameplay, provides a highly stylized combat sequence. The impeccable choreography hints at a pre-rendered demonstration rather than raw gameplay footage. However, it effectively illustrates the game's visual evolution.

A New Visual Identity

The footage reveals a shift away from the franchise's signature hyper-stylized polygons towards a more realistic aesthetic. The visuals appear to bridge the gap between Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The iconic character Akira is featured, sporting new outfits that deviate from his classic look.

Development and Future Outlook

Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the Yakuza series and also involved in the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, is leading development on this new title, alongside their work on Project Century. While details remain scarce, project director Riichirou Yamada's previous comments suggest a bold new direction for the franchise. Sega's commitment to the revival is evident, as expressed by President and COO Shuji Utsumi in the VF Direct 2024 livestream: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" This new entry, coupled with recent releases from other major fighting game franchises, positions the 2020s as a potentially golden age for the genre.
