Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 Out Now!
Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has reached a significant milestone with the release of its final patch, Patch 8, on April 15, 2025. This update marks the conclusion of Larian Studios' work on the game, and it has sparked a notable increase in player engagement. Prior to the update, BG3 maintained around 60,000 concurrent players on Steam. Post-Patch 8, the game's player count has soared to over 169,000, positioning it just outside the top 10 most played games on Steam.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke shared his excitement about the surge in players on Twitter (X) on April 22, 2025. He highlighted the thriving mod support as a key factor allowing them to shift focus towards their next project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to explore new creative ventures.
As a result, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, owners of D&D, will continue the Baldur’s Gate series without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.
12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!
Announced in November 2024, Patch 8 has been eagerly anticipated by the BG3 community. This final update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and a host of other enhancements. The detailed patch notes, available on the BG3 website, reveal a comprehensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring a polished end to the game's development cycle.
Larian Studios has invested heavily in perfecting Baldur’s Gate 3, and their commitment is clear in the extensive updates and fixes included in this last major patch. Although this marks the end of their major updates, Larian promises ongoing support for the game's modding community.
