Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent will see Square Enix transfer operations to NetEase

Author : Aurora Update:Jan 22,2025

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent will transition its operational management to NetEase Games starting January 2024. This change, however, shouldn't significantly impact players, as the transfer will include all saved game data and progress.

While fans can breathe a sigh of relief, this move raises questions about Square Enix's future mobile gaming strategy. This year has seen numerous game closures, making the continued operation of Champions of the Continent a welcome exception. However, the outsourcing to NetEase, following a similar arrangement with Tencent for the mobile port of Final Fantasy XIV, suggests a potential shift away from direct mobile game development for Square Enix.

Recall the recent successful mobile port of Final Fantasy XIV, facilitated by Tencent's Lightspeed Studios. This contrasts with the decision to transfer Champions of the Continent to NetEase.

The writing may have been on the wall since 2022, with the closure of Square Enix Montreal, the studio behind successful mobile titles like Hitman GO and Deus Ex GO. While the survival of Champions of the Continent is positive, it's unfortunate that such strategic shifts are necessary, especially given the clear demand for Square Enix titles on mobile platforms, as evidenced by the significant interest in the FFXIV mobile release.

The question of Square Enix's mobile gaming future remains. In the meantime, explore our list of the top 25 best Android RPGs to fill the gap until the transfer is complete.
