The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is shaping up to be quite the evolution, especially when it comes to its Joy-Cons. Although official confirmation from Nintendo is still pending, recent patents have shed light on significant changes, particularly to the Joy-Cons themselves.
Reports suggest that the Switch 2’s Joy-Cons will attach magnetically to the console, marking a departure from the current design. Additionally, these controllers are rumored to double as computer mice, a feature now all but confirmed by a series of patents filed by Nintendo. According to the patent documentation, “This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, comprising a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing.”
The patent outlines a mechanism where two buttons must be pressed to detach the Joy-Cons from the main unit. It states, “The first button and the second button are provided in the longitudinal direction in the top surface of the protrusion,” and explains that pressing these buttons allows users to overcome magnetic forces attracting them to the magnets inside the recess.
Illustrations accompanying the patent depict the Joy-Cons being used as a mouse, with players holding the controllers sideways and using the shoulder buttons as mouse clicks. The R1 and R2 buttons are designed to function as the left and right mouse buttons, while the joysticks may serve as a scrolling mechanism.
These magnetic attachment and mouse-like functionalities were among the initial leaks about the Switch 2. Later developments included visual teasers showing the Joy-Cons gliding across surfaces, subtly hinting at their potential as mouse alternatives.
