Mortal Kombat 1's Ed Boon Hints at Future DLC Following T-1000 Reveal
Ed Boon, the creative director behind Mortal Kombat 1, recently shared a sneak peek of the upcoming T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media, simultaneously teasing future downloadable content (DLC). This announcement coincided with the release of the Conan the Barbarian guest character and the revelation that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million copies sold.
Boon tweeted a short video showcasing a particularly brutal T-1000 Fatality, a clear nod to the iconic truck chase scene from Terminator 2. The accompanying tweet, however, sparked significant speculation within the Mortal Kombat community. His statement, "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!", fueled rumors of additional DLC characters beyond the currently planned T-1000.
The T-1000 marks the final character in the Khaos Reigns expansion, following the release of Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan. The possibility of a third DLC pack, or a Kombat Pack 3, has been a topic of much fan discussion, particularly given the game's impressive sales figures.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company, has expressed continued confidence in the Mortal Kombat franchise, stating their intention to focus heavily on only four key titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them. Ed Boon himself previously confirmed that NetherRealm had already decided on their next project three years prior, while also promising extended support for Mortal Kombat 1.
While many anticipate a third installment in the Injustice fighting game series, no official announcements have been made by NetherRealm or Warner Bros. The development timeline, impacted by factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer Unreal Engine (from Unreal Engine 3 in Mortal Kombat 11 to Unreal Engine 4 in Mortal Kombat 1), contributed to the decision to release another Mortal Kombat game before returning to the Injustice franchise, according to Boon's previous statements to IGN. However, Boon has explicitly stated that the Injustice franchise is not closed.
