DC Studios head James Gunn has officially denied the rumors: the Waller TV series remains in active development.
The longtime producer recently addressed the speculation on Threads, responding to a fan who asked whether reports about Waller being reworked into a Checkmate series were false. Gunn confirmed with a simple "yes."
Another follower followed up, asking directly, "So Waller is still moving forward?" to which Gunn again replied with a concise "yes."
This firm confirmation is welcome news, especially after Gunn acknowledged recent behind-the-scenes challenges during the show's development. "Frankly, Waller has faced a couple of setbacks," Gunn explained at a DC Studios press event in February alongside co-head Peter Safran.
So far, specific details about the series have been limited. It was first announced as part of the DCU lineup in January 2023, positioned as a Peacemaker spinoff. The story was expected to follow the consequences of Viola Davis' Amanda Waller's daughter, played by Danielle Brooks' Leota Adebayo, exposing Task Force X at the end of Peacemaker Season 1. However, the 2023 Hollywood strikes disrupted those plans, requiring rewrites to align with the updated DCU timeline and causing significant production delays.
The series is being developed by Watchmen writer Christal Henry and Doom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver. While public information remains sparse, Gunn's recent confirmation signals positive momentum. Fans can hopefully expect the series to arrive next year. Fingers crossed.
