The Golden Joystick Awards, celebrating gaming excellence since 1983, returns on November 21, 2024, for its 42nd year, honoring games released between November 11, 2023, and October 4, 2024. This year's awards show a strong showing for indie titles, with games like Balatro and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes receiving multiple nominations.

A significant highlight is the introduction of a new category: "Best Indie Game - Self Published." This category recognizes indie developers who self-develop and self-publish their games, highlighting the growing indie scene and those working without the backing of major publishers.

The 19 award categories boast a diverse range of nominees. Here's a selection:

Voting and Controversy:

Fan voting is now open! The nominees were pre-selected by a jury panel, including representatives from PC Gamer, GamesRadar, the Future Games Show, Edge magazine, Retro Gamer, and more. Voting closes November 8th, 2024. A separate "Ultimate Game of the Year" category will be announced later.

The initial nominee announcement sparked some controversy, with fans expressing disappointment over the exclusion of titles like Black Myth: Wukong, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Space Marine 2 from the Game of the Year categories. The Golden Joystick Awards responded by clarifying that the Ultimate Game of the Year shortlist is yet to be revealed.
