Rockstar Games has confirmed GTA 6's official launch date while announcing a significant delay pushing the release to 2026. Here's what this means for the gaming landscape and other upcoming titles.
GTA 6 Release Date Announced
Launch Scheduled for May 26, 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) stands as one of gaming's most anticipated releases since its initial trailer debuted. After years of anticipation, Rockstar Games has confirmed a release date that differs from initial expectations.
In a May 2 post on X (formerly Twitter), Rockstar revealed GTA 6 will launch on May 26, 2026 - a surprising move considering Take-Two Interactive's previous statement about a Fall 2025 release during their Q3 2025 earnings call.
Rockstar issued an apology for the delay, stating: "We appreciate your patience as we finalize the game. This additional development time ensures we meet our quality standards and deliver the experience our fans deserve." The company promised more details soon.
Take-Two Stands Behind Development Decision
Take-Two Interactive fully endorsed Rockstar's decision to extend GTA 6's development period. In their May 2 statement, CEO Strauss Zelnick explained their stance on the delay.
Zelnick stated: "We support Rockstar's commitment to perfecting Grand Theft Auto VI, which we believe will redefine entertainment standards and exceed player expectations."
This announcement follows Take-Two's indications about closely scheduled game releases. Last week's announcement that Borderlands 4 would launch two weeks early fueled speculation about GTA 6's impact, despite Gearbox Entertainment denying any connection between the release adjustments.
Take-Two re-affirmed their commitment to quality: "Our exceptional game pipeline positions us for sustained business growth and enhanced shareholder value in the coming years."
Devolver Digital Stands Firm on Simultaneous Release
In a bold response to Rockstar's announcement, Devolver Digital confirmed they would launch one of their titles simultaneously with GTA 6 on May 26. The publisher reiterated their March declaration via social media: "You can't escape us."
While Devolver hasn't specified which title will compete against GTA 6, possibilities include sequels to popular franchises like Cult of the Lamb, Enter the Gungeon, or Hotline Miami – or potentially a completely new IP.
Meanwhile, numerous developers reportedly plan to adjust their release schedules to avoid competing with GTA 6, as revealed during The Game Business Show's March discussions with industry executives.
Despite the delay, anticipation remains high for Rockstar's next open-world adventure. Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on May 26, 2025. For continuous updates about the game, explore our full coverage below!
