GBA and DS Gems Revived for Nintendo Switch

Author : Olivia Update:Jan 20,2025

A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Surprisingly, fewer GBA and DS ports exist on the Switch compared to other consoles. This list highlights ten favorites – four GBA and six DS games – showcasing the best of what's available beyond the Nintendo Switch Online app. No particular ranking is applied. Let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge, this GBA version is a solid alternative. A worthwhile comparison to the original, offering a potentially more streamlined experience. A fun game regardless of which version you choose, appealing even to non-shooter fans.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This marks the beginning of an excellent side-scrolling action franchise, though its initial entry shows some early development quirks. These rough edges are smoothed out in later installments, but this is the perfect starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by the stark differences between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG boasts a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The clever concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is fully realized. While later entries see diminishing returns, the original offers plenty of engaging gameplay.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

Another collection where all titles are worth playing, Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, this surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes grinding enjoyable. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal; a top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hampered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its audience, launching Shantae into widespread recognition and ensuring continued appearances across console generations. Its origins as a never-released GBA game add an interesting layer to its history.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA game in its origins (though not initially localized), Ace Attorney is a well-known series. These adventure games blend investigations with dramatic courtroom sequences, combining humorous elements with compelling storylines. The first game is exceptional, although later installments also hold merit.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares the strong writing but introduces unique gameplay. As a ghost, players use their abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of their own death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS title, ideally experienced on its original hardware. While ports haven't perfectly replicated the original experience, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional game.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are worthwhile, Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its original touch controls. Playing all three is highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, but Atlus successfully adapted it to the Switch. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, and Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a rewarding experience despite some complexities.

This concludes the list. Share your favorite GBA and DS games on the Switch in the comments below! Thanks for reading!
