The curtains have fallen on Evil Dead: The Game, as its publisher, Saber Interactive, has initiated the process of removing it from digital storefronts. This asymmetric multiplayer game, which drew inspiration from the iconic action horror franchise, hit the shelves in 2022 for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. In our Evil Dead: The Game review, IGN awarded it an impressive 8/10, praising its thrilling cat-and-mouse gameplay while noting its rough edges that echo the beloved horror/comedy films.
Despite the launch of a Game of the Year Edition a year later, the game struggled to maintain its player base. The planned Nintendo Switch version was canceled in September 2023, and further content development ceased. Now, three years post-launch, Evil Dead: The Game is no longer available for purchase. However, existing players can breathe a sigh of relief as the servers will continue to operate, allowing them to keep enjoying the game.
In a heartfelt statement on the game's Steam page, Saber Interactive confirmed the delisting:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The decision has sparked a wave of negative reviews on the game's Steam page, with many players feeling that this marks the end for Evil Dead: The Game. The game currently holds a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam. Amidst the disappointment, one player with over 380 hours of gameplay left a positive note, stating, "The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."
Saber Interactive, the studio behind last year's successful Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, is not slowing down. They have a robust lineup of upcoming licensed movie games, including John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, and an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender project. Additionally, Turok: Origins and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 are also in the works.
