Elden Ring lore guides the souls of the deceased to the Erdtree, explaining the catacombs found at its base. Interestingly, Nuytsia holds similar spiritual significance in Australian Aboriginal culture, its blossoms representing the souls of the departed, their vibrant colors echoing the sunset, the perceived destination of spirits.
Further strengthening this comparison is Nuytsia's semi-parasitic nature; it sustains itself by drawing nutrients from surrounding plants. This resonates with a popular fan theory suggesting the Erdtree is parasitic, having usurped the life force of an ancient Great Tree. However, it's now understood that references to a "Great Tree" in game descriptions are a translation inaccuracy, referring instead to the Erdtree's own extensive root system.
