Video game adaptations are definitely having a moment right now. This month alone, we’ve seen the release of A Minecraft Movie, the Devil May Cry anime series, and the upcoming second season of The Last of Us. Now, joining the ranks is a film inspired by Sony’s 2015 survival horror title, Until Dawn.

Back when it launched in the peak of the YouTube "Let’s Play" era, Until Dawn was a standout experience—equal parts thrilling to play and entertaining to watch. The game was praised for its cinematic presentation, impactful decision-making mechanics, and some truly spine-chilling jump scares that left players on the edge of their seats.

However, the movie doesn’t seem to take much from the original game beyond the title itself. According to IGN's review, it “shares a title and some key details with the game that inspired it, though it mostly tries to do its own thing – to mixed results.” Even so, the allure of horror storytelling combined with a fresh twist is enough to pique curiosity.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has a licensing deal with Netflix, meaning Until Dawn will eventually land on the platform. Recent Sony films like Venom: The Last Dance and Saturday Night became available on Netflix approximately four months after their theatrical debuts. If this trend continues, Until Dawn should arrive on Netflix around August 25.

What About VOD?

Before hitting streaming services, Until Dawn will be available via digital retailers such as Prime Video. While exact dates may vary depending on box office performance, shorter theatrical windows suggest it could be available to rent online by late May.
