Creating an Anvil

Anvils are crucial for item repair. Crafting one requires 3 iron blocks and 4 iron ingots (a total of 31 iron ingots!), a significant investment. Remember to smelt the iron ore first using a furnace or blast furnace. Use the crafting table recipe shown below:

Anvil Functionality

The anvil's crafting menu has three slots; only two can be used for repair. Two identical, low-durability tools can be combined to create a new, fully durable one. Alternatively, combine a damaged tool with the materials used in its creation.

Note that some items, including enchanted items, have specific repair requirements. All repairs consume experience points; higher durability restoration equates to greater XP cost.

Repairing Enchanted Items

Repairing enchanted items is similar to repairing regular items, but requires more experience points and higher-level enchanted items or enchanted books.

Combining two enchanted items merges their properties (including durability) into a single, higher-level item. The outcome isn't guaranteed, and the XP cost varies depending on item placement—experiment to find the most efficient method!

Enchanted books can also be used in place of a second enchanted item. Using two books can create an even more powerful enchantment.

Anvil Durability and Limitations

Anvils themselves have limited durability and will eventually break from repeated use, indicated by cracks appearing on the block. Remember to craft replacements and maintain an iron supply. Note that anvils cannot repair scrolls, books, bows, chainmail, and several other items.

Repairing Items Without an Anvil

Minecraft's versatility extends to item repair. A crafting table or grindstone offers alternative repair methods, particularly useful during long journeys. Simply combine identical items on the crafting table to increase their durability.

This provides a convenient and efficient alternative to carrying an anvil. Further experimentation with various materials and techniques may reveal even more efficient repair methods.
