Since its reveal, Marvel Rivals has been frequently likened to Overwatch due to their striking similarities. Marvel Rivals, featuring Marvel's iconic heroes and villains, mirrors Overwatch as a competitive multiplayer hero shooter, complete with comparable mechanics and gameplay systems. Both titles are free-to-play, supported by live service models, and regularly introduce new characters to maintain player engagement.
Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals has seen a surge in popularity, with speculation suggesting this growth may be at the expense of Overwatch 2's player base. According to current narratives, Blizzard's Overwatch 2 is experiencing a decline in interest as NetEase's Marvel Rivals attracts a substantial number of players.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Aaron Keller, the director of Overwatch 2, addressed the new competitive environment Blizzard faces with Marvel Rivals now capturing the attention of millions of players.

Keller acknowledged the unprecedented competitive landscape, stating, "We're obviously in a new competitive landscape that I think, for Overwatch, we've never really been in before, to this extent where there's another game that's so similar to the one that we've created." Despite the potential threat, Keller found the situation "exciting" and appreciated how Marvel Rivals took Overwatch's established ideas in a "different direction."
He admitted that Marvel Rivals' success has prompted Blizzard to adopt a less cautious approach with Overwatch 2. As a result, Blizzard has announced significant changes planned for 2025. These updates will not only bring new content but will also fundamentally alter the core gameplay with the introduction of hero perks and the return of loot boxes.
The gaming community will be keenly observing whether these changes can reignite interest in Overwatch 2. It's been nearly nine years since the original Overwatch debuted in 2016 and two-and-a-half years since Overwatch 2 launched. Although Blizzard does not disclose Overwatch player numbers, Steam's concurrent player data shows Overwatch 2's peak at just 37,046 over the last 24 hours, the lowest since its launch on the platform in 2023. In contrast, Marvel Rivals maintains its position as a top 10 most-played game on Steam, with a peak of 310,287 players in the same period.

Overwatch 2 continues to struggle with a 'mostly negative' user review rating on Steam. Notably, in August 2023, it became the worst user-reviewed game on Steam, largely due to dissatisfaction with its monetization strategy. Blizzard faced backlash for updating the premium original Overwatch into a free-to-play sequel, effectively making the first game unplayable. Overwatch 2 has also faced multiple controversies, including the cancellation of its highly anticipated PvE Hero mode, which many players felt was the primary reason for the sequel.
