Assassin's Creed Shadows: Revamped Parkour and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan adventure, is set to launch February 14th. This latest installment introduces significant changes, particularly to its parkour system, and features a unique dual-protagonist approach.

The game's core gameplay shifts focus to a refined parkour experience and distinct character styles. Players will control both Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at navigating rooftops and shadows, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai specializing in direct combat. This design aims to appeal to both fans of classic stealth gameplay and those who prefer the more action-oriented RPG combat found in titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.

A New Approach to Parkour:

Ubisoft has significantly redesigned the parkour system. Unlike previous entries, free climbing is restricted. Instead, players will navigate through designated "parkour highways." While this might initially seem limiting, Ubisoft assures players that most surfaces remain climbable, albeit requiring strategic approaches. The addition of a grappling hook further enhances traversal options.

The developers have also refined ledge dismounts. Players can now seamlessly transition from ledges, executing stylish acrobatic maneuvers instead of the traditional ledge-grabbing descent. A new prone position allows for diving while sprinting, adding another layer to movement fluidity. As Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois explains, this focused approach to parkour design allows for more control over character movement and environmental interaction, particularly distinguishing Naoe's agile capabilities from Yasuke's limitations.

Release and Competition:

Assassin's Creed Shadows will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Its February 14th release date positions it amidst a crowded launch window, competing with titles like Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. Whether it can capture the gaming spotlight remains to be seen.
