The CrashScan app, used with an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, provides a powerful tool for accessing and interpreting data from a vehicle's Event Data Recorder (EDR), commonly known as the "black box," where supported (see support details below). CrashScan helps investigators identify, capture, and analyze stored accident data, assisting in validating insurance claims and providing crucial insights into liability.

Contextual Accident Reports

A successful CrashScan provides detailed information on impact severity, orientation (front, rear, or side), and crucial contextual data, including:

• Accident severity (minor, moderate, or severe)
• EDR trigger thresholds
• 5 seconds of pre-crash data: speed, brake pedal and accelerator use, and steering input
• Number of occupants and seatbelt status
• Estimated repair cost
• Likelihood of structural crush damage
• Injury risk thresholds (whiplash, injury duration)
• G-force context compared to daily activities

*Injury risk algorithms utilize stored acceleration values, scientific literature, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

Privacy Legislation Regarding EDR Data

Canada: Currently, no specific legislation governs EDR data; it's considered diagnostic and non-private. However, best practices dictate obtaining insurer consent.

United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015 and legislation in seventeen states (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington) regulate EDR data access. These laws generally require consent from the vehicle owner or policyholder before data retrieval, with some exceptions.

By downloading the CrashScan app, you consent to its installation, future updates, and data collection practices as outlined in our privacy statement. You can withdraw consent at any time by uninstalling the app. The app may communicate with Collision Science's servers for functionality and usage metrics, affect app-related preferences or data on your device, and collect information.
