Typically, 29 is enjoyed by four players divided into fixed partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other. The game utilizes 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck, comprising eight cards in each of the traditional "French" suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. The cards rank within each suit from high to low as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The objective? To capture tricks that contain high-value cards.

Here's how the cards are valued:

• Jacks: 3 points each
• Nines: 2 points each
• Aces: 1 point each
• Tens: 1 point each
• Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): no points

This yields a total of 28 points from cards. Some versions of the game award an additional point for the last trick, bringing the total to 29 points, hence the game's name. Despite this, most contemporary players do not count the last trick's point, yet the game remains known as 29 even in these variations with only 28 points.

Traditionally, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives, discarded from the full 52-card deck, serve as trump indicators, with each player receiving one of each suit. The Sixes are employed for keeping score, with each partnership using one red and one black Six for this purpose.
