The iconic Yakuza / Like a Dragon series is hitting its 20th anniversary this year, and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is marking the occasion by letting fans decide on the next official merchandise. From cult outfits to traffic cones, the choices are as bizarre as the franchise itself. As reported by Automaton, fans have the chance to vote on an impressive array of 100 items, with RGG Studio promising to bring the top two to market within the next two years. The voting is only listed in Japanese, but fans can cast their votes on the official website.
Among the more conventional items up for grabs are a 20th anniversary celebration hoodie and a Yakuza-themed pencil case. However, the list also includes some of the series' more eccentric offerings, such as the cult outfit donned by Munan Suzuki, the leader of The Order of Munan Chohept Onast cult in Yakuza 0, the oversized traffic cone Majima uses to ambush Kiryu in Yakuza Kiwami, and the intriguing "Puffy Gold Pants."
Other items available for voting include the sake Majima sips in a shack in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Akiyama's gold watch, the fountain pen Kiryu uses to write to Dojima in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, the tambourine Kashiwagi plays during karaoke in Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Kiryu's wrestling mask from Yakuza 3, and Saejima's prisoner uniform from Yakuza 4, among many other quirky choices.
In addition to the merch excitement, fans have much to look forward to in the series' 20th anniversary year of 2025. Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is slated for release on February 21. While RGG Studio celebrated the 10th anniversary with the beloved prequel Yakuza 0, there's no word yet on whether a similar project will be unveiled later in the year.
Despite the possibility of two releases in one year seeming ambitious, RGG Studio is no stranger to rapid development cycles. Over the past five years, the studio has released an impressive lineup including Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Judgment Remastered, Lost Judgment, Like a Dragon: Ishin, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, and Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, along with two Super Monkey Ball games and an enhanced remaster of Virtua Fighter 5, totaling nine games.
